Dental Crowns and bridges
Crowns and Bridges
A dental bridge is a type of dental restoration that is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Bridges are typically made up of two or more dental crowns that are attached to the remaining natural teeth on either side of the gap, with a false tooth or teeth (called a pontic) in between.
- A tooth that is cracked, broken, or weakened
- A tooth that has a large cavity that cannot be filled with a regular filling
- A tooth that has undergone root canal therapy
- A tooth that is misshapen or discoloured
- To improve the appearance of a tooth for cosmetic reasons
The process of having a crown fitted typically involves two appointments. During the first appointment, the tooth is prepared by removing any damaged or decayed areas and shaping the remaining tooth structure to accommodate the crown. An impression is then taken of the prepared tooth and sent to a dental laboratory, where the crown is custom-made. A temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it until the final crown is ready.
At the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the final crown is placed over the prepared tooth. The fit and appearance of the crown are checked and adjusted as necessary to ensure that it is comfortable and natural-looking. Once the fit is satisfactory, the crown is permanently bonded to the tooth.
Dental Bridges
The process of getting a dental bridge typically involves two or more appointments. During the first appointment, the teeth on either side of the gap are prepared by removing a portion of the enamel to make room for the crowns. An impression is then taken of the prepared teeth and sent to a dental lab, where the bridge is custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth.
At the second appointment, the bridge is placed over the prepared teeth and checked for fit and comfort. The dentist may make adjustments as necessary to ensure that the bridge feels comfortable and natural. Once the fit is satisfactory, the bridge is permanently bonded to the remaining teeth, providing a secure and natural-looking replacement for the missing teeth.
