What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a procedure used to treat infection or damage deep inside a tooth. The soft tissue inside the tooth (the pulp) can become infected due to deep decay, a crack, or trauma. If left untreated, the infection can spread and the tooth may need to be extracted. Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the root canals, and seals the tooth — allowing you to keep your natural tooth and relieving the pain caused by the infection.
Persistent or intense pain in a tooth, particularly when biting or applying pressure, can indicate infection in the pulp.
Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures that lingers after the source is removed may suggest pulp damage.
Swelling around the tooth, tenderness in the gum, or a small raised bump on the gum can indicate an abscess.
A tooth that has darkened or changed colour may indicate that the pulp inside has been damaged or has died.
An infected tooth can sometimes feel loose or tender to touch as the infection affects the surrounding bone.

With modern techniques and local anaesthetic, root canal treatment should be no more uncomfortable than having a filling. Most patients are pleasantly surprised. Any mild soreness afterwards usually settles within a few days.
