What are dental implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Typically made from titanium, a biocompatible material that bonds naturally with bone, they create a strong, stable foundation for a crown, bridge or denture.
Fixed and stableFixed in place, so no slipping or moving while eating or speaking. An implant tooth is cleaned and used like the tooth it replaces.
Natural-lookingThe crown is made to match the shade and shape of the teeth around it, so it is designed to blend in with your smile.
Comfortable functionHelps restore a normal bite and chewing, so you can eat the foods you have been avoiding.
Supports the jawboneHelps maintain bone and facial structure over time, where a gap left empty tends to lose bone.
IndependentDoes not rely on the neighbouring teeth for support, unlike some bridge options, so healthy teeth are left untouched.

Choosing the right treatment
Implant, bridge or denture?
Three ways to replace a missing tooth, and each suits different mouths. The consultation tells you which is right for you, and we offer all three here.
Dental implant
A titanium root placed in the jaw with a crown on top. Fixed, independent of the neighbouring teeth, and helps maintain the bone. Needs healthy gums and enough bone, and takes a few months from placement to final tooth while the implant heals. The highest cost of the three, but usually the longest-lasting.
Fixed bridge
A replacement tooth held in place by a crown on the tooth next to the gap, or crowns on the teeth either side. Fixed and quicker than an implant, with no surgery, but it relies on the supporting teeth, which usually need to be prepared to carry it.
A removable plate carrying one or more teeth. The least expensive option and no surgery, but it can move while eating or speaking. Implants can be used to hold a denture firmly in place if you already have one that moves.

The process
How implant treatment works
Implant treatment happens in stages over a few months, because the implant needs time to heal into the bone before the final tooth is fitted. Here is what happens, step by step.

1Consultation and assessmentWe examine your mouth, discuss your goals, and assess gum health and bone support. We talk through timescales and costs clearly, and you leave with a plan. Nothing is booked in on the day unless you want it to be.
2PlanningWhere needed, we use X-rays and further imaging to plan the implant position safely and accurately. Digital guided planning maps the position before the day, so placement follows a plan rather than a guess.
3Implant placementThe implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Most patients find the procedure very manageable. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.
4HealingThe implant bonds with the bone over the following months. Where a gap would show, a temporary tooth can usually be arranged while you heal. We review you during this stage.
5Digital scanOnce the implant has bonded, we take a digital scan of the implant in the mouth and the teeth around it, with no putty impressions, and send it to our dental laboratory, who make your crown or bridge to fit the implant and match your teeth.
6Final toothAt the next visit we fit your final crown, bridge or denture so it looks natural and functions comfortably. Your bite is checked and you are shown how to clean around it.
Implants are looked after like your own teeth: brushing, cleaning between the teeth, and regular check-ups and hygiene visits. Healthy gums around the implant are what keep it healthy for the long term.

Implant treatment starts with an examination with Radhika, who will tell you whether an implant is the right option for the tooth and what the plan would involve. Call the practice to arrange it, or ask at your next check-up.
The single implant fee is the starting point for replacing one tooth. Digital guided planning is added where the position needs mapping in advance, and a bone graft is added only where there is not enough bone to hold the implant securely. Replacing several teeth with an implant-supported bridge or denture is quoted as a plan of its own.

Placement is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal and manageable with standard pain relief. Most patients find the procedure very manageable.
Timescales vary, but many cases take a few months from placement to final restoration, allowing time for the implant to heal into the bone. Where a bone graft is needed first, the overall time is longer. We outline your expected timeline at the consultation.
With good oral hygiene, regular check-ups and healthy gums, implants can last many years. Like natural teeth they need ongoing care: the crown on top can wear or chip over time and be replaced without disturbing the implant beneath it.
At Dentistry @ Jordanhill a single implant is £2,853, with digital guided implant planning at £200 and a bone graft at £359 where needed. A full treatment plan with exact costs is provided at your consultation, and finance is available on larger treatment plans.
You may still be suitable. Some patients require additional planning or preparatory procedures, such as a bone graft to rebuild the area before or during placement. We assess this with X-rays and imaging and explain all the options clearly before anything is decided.
Smoking can reduce healing and increase the risk of complications. It does not rule implants out, but we discuss the risks honestly at the consultation and advise on the best route forward, which may include support to cut down or stop around the time of treatment.
There is no upper age limit. What matters is general health, healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant, all of which are assessed at the consultation. Implants are only placed once the jaw has finished growing, so they are not usually offered to younger teenagers.
Usually not where it would show. A temporary tooth can often be arranged for the healing period, so you can smile and speak normally while the implant bonds with the bone. Your dentist discusses the options for your case at the consultation.
Yes. Two or more implants can support a fixed bridge replacing several teeth, and implants can also hold a full denture firmly in place so it no longer moves. Plans like these are assessed and quoted individually at the consultation.
Planning the exact position, angle and depth of the implant on a computer before the day, using X-rays and further imaging of your jaw. A guide made from that plan is then used during placement. It is added where the position needs mapping in advance, and costs £200.
Like your own teeth: brush twice a day, clean between the teeth and around the implant with interdental brushes or floss, and keep up your routine check-ups and hygiene visits. Healthy gums around the implant are what keep it healthy, so gum care matters more, not less, once an implant is in place.
It depends on the gap and the teeth either side. An implant stands on its own and helps maintain the bone, which is why it is usually the first choice where the neighbouring teeth are healthy. A bridge is quicker and avoids surgery, and can be the better option where a neighbouring tooth already needs a crown. We offer both and recommend the one that suits your mouth.
