What are dental implants?

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. Typically made from titanium — a biocompatible material that bonds naturally with bone — they create a strong, stable foundation for a crown, bridge or denture. Because implants are fixed in place, they do not move or slip, and help maintain the strength and shape of the jawbone over time.

Comfortable function

Supports jawbone

Independent

How implant treatment works

How implant treatment works

1

Step 1 Consultation and assessment

We examine your mouth, discuss your goals, and assess gum health and bone support. We’ll talk through timescales and costs clearly.

2

Step 2 Planning

Where needed, we use X-rays and further imaging to plan implant positioning safely and accurately.

3

Step 3 Implant placement

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Most patients find the procedure very manageable.

4

Step 4 Healing and final tooth

Once healing is complete, we fit your final crown, bridge or denture so it looks natural and functions comfortably.

Implant FAQs

Implant FAQs

+

Does implant treatment hurt?

Placement is carried out under local anaesthetic so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal and manageable with standard pain relief.

+

How long does treatment take?

Timescales vary but many cases take a few months from placement to final restoration, allowing time for healing. We’ll outline your expected timeline at consultation.

+

How long do implants last?

With good oral hygiene, regular check-ups and healthy gums, implants can last many years. Like natural teeth they need ongoing care.

+

What if I don’t have enough bone?

You may still be suitable. Some patients require additional planning or preparatory procedures. We’ll assess this and explain all options clearly.

+

Can smokers have implants?

Smoking can reduce healing and increase risk of complications. We’ll discuss the risks honestly and advise on the best route forward.

+

Are implants available on the NHS?

Implants are usually provided privately. NHS funding is uncommon and limited to specific clinical situations. We’ll always explain all available options.
