Missing tooth
Whether a tooth was lost years ago or has just been taken out, there are three ways to fill the space: a bridge, an implant or a denture. We offer all three here, and the examination tells you which suits your mouth and your budget.

Why fill the space
A gap at the front is the one people notice, but a missing back tooth matters just as much. The teeth around a space do not stay where they are, and the longer it is left, the more involved the fix tends to be.
Before and after
No stock images and no models. These are patients treated in this practice, photographed before and after.

A missing upper tooth replaced with a dental bridge, with the worn front teeth evened out by composite bonding at the same time so the smile reads as one.

Years without back teeth, and unable to have implants. The broken-down lower teeth were crowned, then digitally planned upper and lower dentures gave him his back teeth again.
Individual outcomes vary; your dentist can show you similar cases at your examination.
Choosing the right replacement
Three ways to replace a tooth, and the right one depends on the teeth either side, the bone beneath, and what you want to spend. The examination tells you which are open to you.
A false tooth held by crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. Fixed in place, made in the laboratory to match your teeth, and usually finished over two visits. Suits best when the neighbouring teeth already have fillings or crowns. Quoted after your examination.
About bridges →A titanium post placed in the jaw that carries a crown of its own, so the neighbouring teeth are left untouched. The closest thing to a natural tooth, and the longest lasting, over several months of treatment. From £2,853.
About implants →A removable plate carrying one or more teeth. The simplest and most affordable option, with no drilling, and the usual choice where several teeth are missing or as a first step while you decide. From £578.
About dentures →Your appointment
Whichever option you choose, it starts the same way: an examination, a plan and a confirmed cost. Here is what happens, step by step.

Nervous about the dentist? Every option is explained before anything is done, you set the pace, and you can stop at any point by raising a hand.
How we help nervous patients →What it costs
You will know the full cost after your examination, before any treatment begins.
Finance is available on larger treatment plans.
Spread the cost of your treatment →Which replacement you choose, and how many teeth it covers. A bridge is priced by the number of units it needs: replacing one tooth takes three (two crowns and the tooth between them). An implant may need digital guided planning or a bone graft on top of the single implant fee, and your dentist will tell you before you decide. A denture is priced by its type and the material it is made from.

Missing tooth FAQs
Anything we have not covered, ask at your examination or call the practice on 0141 334 2550.
Not always, and your dentist will say so if the space can safely be left, which is sometimes true of a back tooth with nothing opposite it. For most spaces, though, the teeth around it drift and the bite changes, so replacing the tooth sooner is simpler and cheaper than correcting the knock-on effects later.
For a single tooth with healthy neighbours, an implant is usually the best long-term option because it stands on its own and leaves the other teeth untouched. A bridge is the better choice when the teeth either side already need crowns, and it is quicker. A partial denture is the most affordable and involves no drilling. The examination tells you which of these are open to you.
At Dentistry @ Jordanhill a single implant is £2,853, a partial acrylic denture is from £578, and a bridge is quoted after your examination because the price depends on the number of units it needs. The new patient examination is £65 and includes two X-rays. You know the exact cost before anything begins, and finance is available on larger plans.
An immediate denture can be made beforehand and fitted on the day the tooth comes out, with the definitive denture made once the gum has healed, usually 6 to 12 weeks later. A bridge is usually made after 4 to 6 weeks of healing. An implant is usually placed once the socket has healed, around 12 to 14 weeks after the extraction, and planning for it can start sooner. If a front tooth is being taken out, ask about a temporary replacement so you are not left with a gap.
No. A bridge or denture can be made at any time. An implant depends on how much bone is left, which the X-rays show; where the bone has thinned, a graft can rebuild it, or a bridge may be the more straightforward choice.
Yes. Bridges, implant crowns and denture teeth are all made in a shade and shape chosen to sit alongside your own teeth, and your dentist checks the match before the final fit. Where the teeth either side are worn or uneven, composite bonding can be done at the same time so the whole smile reads as one.
With good cleaning and regular check-ups, a bridge typically lasts 10–15 years, an implant can last decades, and a denture is usually remade or relined every 5–7 years as the gum changes shape. We show you how to clean around each at the fitting, because that is what makes the difference.
No. New patients are welcome, and the examination is where your dentist sets out which replacements suit you. If you are already registered with us, book a routine examination and tell us you want to talk about the space.
