What veneers can improve
Veneers are usually chosen over bonding when the change is bigger: a colour whitening cannot shift, or several front teeth to reshape at once. Most people treat only the teeth that show when they smile, not the whole mouth. We offer hybrid, zirconia and Emax porcelain veneers; your dentist recommends one at the consultation.

Choosing the right treatment
Veneers, bonding or whitening?
Three treatments change the look of front teeth, and they do different jobs. Often the right answer is one of them; sometimes it is two in sequence, with whitening first.
Porcelain veneers
Custom-made ceramic shells made in a laboratory and bonded over the front of the tooth. Suit larger changes to colour, shape and alignment, and are more durable and more stain-resistant than bonding. Need some preparation of the tooth and more than one visit.
Composite bonding
Resin added directly to the tooth in a single visit. Less invasive and more affordable, and nothing permanent is done to the tooth. Best for chips, small gaps, worn edges and marks, rather than a change of colour across several teeth.
Changes the colour of your natural teeth, not their shape. If you want both, whitening comes first: veneers are matched to the shade of the teeth around them and do not lighten afterwards.
Teeth that are noticeably crowded or crooked are usually straightened first with clear aligners, so that any veneers afterwards can be thinner and need less preparation.
Veneers take more than one visit, and the planning is the part that matters most. Nothing is prepared until you have seen and approved your new smile in your own mouth.

4Preparation and scanYour teeth are gently prepared under local anaesthetic and a precise digital scan is taken for your custom veneers. Temporary veneers in the shape of the trial smile protect the teeth while the porcelain is made.
5Veneer placementYour custom veneers are tried in, checked with you for shade and fit, then carefully bonded to create a natural-looking smile. Your bite is checked and the edges polished before you leave.
Some sensitivity in the days after preparation and fitting is normal and usually settles quickly. We review the result with you at a follow-up visit, and you are welcome to come back sooner if anything feels high or catches.

What moves the price
Two things: which type of veneer suits the tooth, and how many teeth you want treated. The four types differ in material and in how much of the tooth is prepared, and the right one depends on how much colour the veneer has to mask, how much of the tooth is left and how hard your bite loads it. Your dentist recommends one at the consultation, and that is the price you are quoted.
Most people treat only the teeth that show when they smile, often six or eight upper teeth, rather than the whole mouth. Where one or two teeth are the problem, a single veneer matched to its neighbours may be all that is needed.

Placing veneers involves a small amount of tooth preparation, which means the process is generally considered irreversible: a prepared tooth needs a veneer, or a replacement veneer, from then on. That is why we plan with a trial smile first and why a thorough consultation matters before proceeding.
With good care and regular check-ups, Emax porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years or longer. Porcelain does not stain or wear the way composite resin does, which is the main reason veneers outlast bonding. A veneer that is eventually chipped or worn can usually be replaced.
Modern porcelain veneers are designed to closely mimic the appearance of natural tooth enamel, including the way it reflects light. Shade, shape and length are chosen to suit your face and the teeth around them, and you see the design in your own mouth as a trial smile before anything is made. No. Many people treat only the teeth that show when they smile, and a single discoloured or misshapen tooth can be veneered on its own and matched to its neighbours. Where several teeth need a change of colour, treating them together gives a more even result. The number is agreed with you at the consultation and shown in the trial smile.
Veneers can disguise a slightly rotated or set-back tooth, but they do not move teeth. If the teeth are noticeably crowded or crooked, clear aligners usually straighten them first, so that any veneers needed afterwards can be thinner and need less preparation. Your dentist will tell you which applies to you.
Much like your own teeth: brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, floss as normal, and keep up your routine check-ups and hygiene visits. Avoid biting your nails, chewing ice or opening packets with your front teeth. If you grind or clench at night, ask about a night guard to protect the porcelain.
A veneer that comes away in one piece can often be cleaned and rebonded, so keep it and call the practice. A chipped or cracked veneer is assessed first; a small chip can sometimes be smoothed or repaired, and a larger one is replaced with a new veneer made to the same design.
