Same-day crowns and onlays

Same-day crowns, made in our Glasgow West End practice

Most crowns are made in a laboratory and fitted at a second visit, with a temporary in between. Ours can be different. We design, press and fit hybrid ceramic crowns and onlays here in the practice on a SprintRay Midas, so a tooth can be prepared and permanently restored in one visit.

Why it matters

What a same-day crown changes for you

A conventional crown takes two appointments a couple of weeks apart. Making the crown in the practice removes the wait, the temporary and the second visit.

The material

What is a hybrid ceramic crown?

A hybrid ceramic is ceramic and zirconia particles held in a resin, pressed from liquid into the exact shape of your tooth, then hardened under light and polished. It sits between a white filling and a full ceramic crown in how it behaves.

The technology

The SprintRay Midas digital press

Midas is a different idea from the milling machines some practices use, which grind a crown out of a block. It presses the crown from a sealed capsule of liquid hybrid ceramic, layer by layer, using light. SprintRay describes it as the first digital restoration press of its kind, and it makes crowns, inlays, onlays and veneers in minutes.

  1. ScanA digital scan of the prepared tooth and the teeth around it. No putty impressions.
  2. DesignYour dentist designs the crown on screen from the scan, checking the fit against the neighbouring teeth and the bite.
  3. PressThe design is sent to the Midas, which presses the crown from a single-use capsule of hybrid ceramic in a matter of minutes.
  4. Finish and fitThe crown is cured, polished, tried in, adjusted if needed and bonded to the tooth. You leave with the finished restoration.

Choosing the right approach

Same-day, laboratory or a filling?

Which restoration suits a tooth depends on how much of it is left, where it is in the mouth and how hard it works. Your dentist tells you at the examination.

Same-day hybrid ceramic

A crown or onlay designed, pressed and fitted in the practice in one visit. Suits most back teeth and many front teeth. No temporary, no second appointment. Crowns from £504; onlays quoted after examination.

Laboratory full ceramic

Emax or zirconia made by our dental laboratory from a digital scan, fitted at a second visit with a temporary in between. Chosen where the highest translucency or strength is needed. Up to £792.

White filling or bonding

For a smaller cavity or chip where enough tooth remains to hold a filling, composite is placed directly in one visit. From £110.

What moves the price

The material, and how much work the tooth needs first. A hybrid ceramic crown made in the practice sits at the lower end of the crown range; laboratory full ceramic sits above it. A tooth that needs a core build-up or root canal treatment before it can be crowned is quoted for that as well, and nothing starts until you have agreed the cost.

Your questions, answered

Anything we have not covered, ask at your examination or call the practice on 0141 334 2550.

Yes, for a hybrid ceramic crown or onlay. The tooth is prepared, scanned and the restoration designed, pressed on our SprintRay Midas, polished and bonded in the same appointment. Your dentist confirms at the examination that the tooth is suitable, and books a longer single appointment rather than two.

Longer than a normal crown visit, because the making happens while you are here. The pressing itself takes minutes; most of the time is preparation, design and finishing. You are told the appointment length when it is booked, and you are welcome to bring something to read.

It is a definitive restoration, made for everyday chewing, and it is strong enough for most back teeth. Full ceramic materials such as zirconia are harder, and your dentist will recommend a laboratory crown where that extra strength or translucency is needed, for example on a tooth that takes very heavy load or a front tooth where the match has to be exact.

A crown covers the whole tooth above the gum. An onlay covers the biting surface and one or more cusps, leaving the sound walls of the tooth alone. Where the damage allows it, an onlay keeps more of your own tooth, and both can be made in the practice the same day.

The shade is chosen against your own teeth before the crown is pressed, and the material has a natural translucency. On a back tooth it is very hard to tell apart from the teeth around it. For the front teeth your dentist will tell you whether a hybrid ceramic or a laboratory full ceramic crown will give the better match.

The tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic, and because everything happens in one visit there is only one injection. The tooth and gum may feel tender for a day or two afterwards, and the new crown can feel slightly different in the bite at first. Both usually settle, and if it feels high after a few days we adjust it.

Like any crown, it depends on the tooth underneath, your bite and how well it is cleaned. Hybrid ceramic restorations are made to last for years, and a chip can usually be repaired in the mouth rather than the crown being replaced. Regular examinations and hygiene visits are what protect the tooth beneath it.

No. Anyone can book a new patient examination online. Your dentist checks the tooth, takes X-rays if they are needed, and tells you whether a same-day crown or onlay suits it and what it will cost before anything begins.
